After the slow roll downhill during the 1980s, I think '89-'90 (maybe early '91) represented a brief, final burst of energy from the Dead before things simply dropped of a cliff and plunged into the sewer as the 90s moved on. Many shows from this period compare favorably to the best efforts of the early Mydland years ('79-81). Unfortunately, this show does not display much of that final surge.

This was my second to last Dead show, as I again found myself leaving the venue wondering why I was sinking so much time and energy into an increasingly empty, played-out experience. It wasn't so much the two predictable, indifferently delivered sets that bummed me (though that certainly didn't help) as the general feeling that the crowd was mainly there to celebrate its own sense of hedonistic entitlement. It didn't really matter what was happening (or NOT happening) onstage- Jerry's mere presence was all the excuse that was needed for an asinine, free-for-all party ("Yeah! We broke past security and turned the hill behind the end zone into a giant mudslide! We're SO cool!!!"). Unfortunately, the toll that party was taking on countless souls inside and outside the Dead "scene" was rapidly spiraling out of control.

We had a magic year , as the music goes .
Beginning 8 / 4 / 89 to 9 / 20 / 90
E '90 fans anywhere ?
The scene was already out of control .
All those fun parking lot scenes @ Nassau , for example .

how bout that parking (5th or 6th most used?) lot!! Saw 19 (missed the first 13 + last 10) of the 42 - with my first 10 being that magical scene, and the last 9 being that clusterfuck-that as I asked in another post I would love to know the answer as to what happened. unfortunately I think only the answer man knows.

that's one of the best explanations of the last 15 years that I've ever read.

Now what would be interesting to read (it would probably have to be a trilogy) is how did (whatever you would call the thing that created whatever it was!?) the same thing that created the first 15 create the last 15?

I think you're right- several volumes could be written on why Pt.2 was so drastically different than Pt.1 despite sharing a very similar cast.
